Congress won 48 seats, but not enough for a clear majority.
Opposition + independents had 33 seats combined, which created instability.
B. D. Sharma (INC) became the first elected Chief Minister of Haryana.
Soon after, defections began — leading to the famous “Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram” phenomenon when MLA Gaya Lal switched parties multiple times in a single day (1967).
This period marked the beginning of frequent political instability in Haryana.
